[COMPETITION CLOSED] – S A Guide-Dogs Winter Acoustic Music Festival {{WIN TWO TICKET UPGRADES}}

Reading Time: 3 minutes

SA Guide-Dogs (GDA) trains Guide, Service and Autism Support Dogs to provide mobility, independence and companionship to the visually and physically impaired.

Their College of Orientation and Mobility train Orientation and Mobility Practitioners who teach skills of daily living to rural communities.  GDA is a fully constituted welfare organisation, registered with The Dept. of Social Development in terms of the Nonprofit Organisations Act, 1997 (Act 71 of 1997) and is affiliated to The South African National Council for the Blind.

The breeds most suited for the work of Guide, Service and Autism Support Dogs are the Labrador RetrieverGerman Shepherd and Golden Retriever. The Association breeds its own dogs from specially SA Guide Dogs Winter Acoustic Festivalselected breeding lines. At seven weeks old the pups are placed in the homes of volunteer ‘Puppy Raisers’ who provide the first vital year of social and preparation training – but the cost is borne by the Association.

At approximately 12 months old, the dogs are ready for their formal training which takes six to eight months. They are then carefully matched with the right person to ensure a long and lasting good working relationship. This partnership training takes place at their residential training centres, and then in the home and neighbourhood of the working dog’s new owner. Regular follow-up visits and continuous communication from the Association are part of the package.

GDA is funded entirely by way of donations – a remarkable achievement on the part of donors considering that it costs in excess of R100 000.00  to produce one trained ‘unit’ of owner and dog, with ongoing aftercare. Each new owner is asked to pay a single nominal amount of R5.00 as part of the contract.

This year as part of GDA’s initiatives to raise funds they are hosting a Winter Acoustic Music Festival. Local South African bands keeping everyone entertained and warm are Georgetown, The Motherland, Majozi, Jerry And The Bandits and Zé. Craft beer and rustic artisan food will be on sale.

It’s all happening on the 6th August 2017 Saturday 30th September 2017 (event date has been changed) at 126 Wroxham Road, Paulshof, Johannesburg, South Africa. Gates open at 11h00 and the bands will keep you entertained until 17h00.

Limited tickets are on sale and can be purchased via Webtickets from R30 for children under 13 years up to R150 for adults. Really reasonable and it’s for a great cause!
