REVIEW : SNOW WHITE PANTOMIME THE FAIREST PANTO IN ALL THE LAND AND WIN!

REVIEW : SNOW WHITE PANTOMIME THE FAIREST PANTO IN ALL THE LAND AND WIN!
Reading Time: 4 minutes

Snow White, one of my favourite fairy tales and now a much-anticipated pantomime is finally on stage at the Joburg Theatre. This particular production kept me captivated throughout and is sure to keep you spellbound from the minute Desmond Dube, playing the comic role of Dame Dolla Diddledaddledoodledragon, makes his or is it her appearance. Desmond is hilarious in this role and will keep you in stitches with all the innuendos, an obvious favourite with all the kids in the audience!

This was our first Janice Honeyman panto, after only hearing about how amazing they have been in the past and it delivered on so many levels. Snow White was first performed in 1987, at the Alexander Theatre in Braamfontein, thanks to writer/director Janice Honeyman. Thirty-one years later, the Joburg Theatre and Bernard Jay present Janice Honeyman’s Snow White, once again.

It’s spectacular as it is riveting and its a wonderful combination of adult and kiddies entertainment! The sets are spectacular and the costumes superlative!  The unconventional but mesmerising special effects through 3D had the kids and adults caught off-guard by the sudden appearance of giant snakes, spiders, and the ever-popular Shrek character. The son and I loved this wonderful and innovative addition to a theatre production but I’m not sure who screamed the loudest when the snake made its sudden appearance.

“Each year Joburg Theatre audiences expect us to exceed with surprises and to go over-the-top with spectacle,” says executive producer of the panto Bernard Jay.  “Janice Honeyman and the team have been ‘shopping’ for effects around the world and I know that this production of Snow White will live up to our panto reputation in every aspect.”

#SnowWhitePantoSAThe Fairest Panto in All The Land is beautifully scripted with authentic South African humour beautifully embodying our “Local is Lekka” sentiment. Kiruna-Lind Devar was a magnificent Snow White and Princess. What’s a fairytale without a prince and this is where Tshepo Ncokoane, Prince Chuck B Charming sang beautifully in his deep masculine voice. The wicked queen was brought to life by Ben Voss who was splendid in this role. The seven dwarfs were also extremely convincing. John Robbie the legendary 702 talk radio show host and international rugby player from the 80’s makes his pantomime debut but as expected is a little out of his comfort zone as The Major-Dumb-Ou of the Royal Palace of Cool Cornucopia.

Snow White is written and directed by Janice Honeyman, with musical direction by Coenraad Rall and choreography by Nicol Sheraton.  Bernard Jay serves as executive producer of this, his 18th, Janice Honeyman pantomime. It’s a must see for the whole family and is on stage until December the 23rd, 2018 at The Nelson Mandela Theatre at Joburg Theatre.

Tickets range from R245 – R375 per person and can be booked at www.joburgtheatre.com or by calling 0861 670 670.
