Choosing a car becomes a very different experience when you have kids. All of a sudden, your focus switches from putting your foot down and enjoying the thrill of driving on open roads to ensuring your precious bundle is as safe as possible in the back seat. If you’re on the hunt for a new family car, here are some tips to help you find the perfect vehicle.

Safety is a priority for every parent. Whether you have a newborn, a toddler or a teenager, it’s crucial to buy a car with an excellent safety record. Read reviews, check ratings and look for vehicles that boast additional safety features. Today, many models utilise cutting-edge technology to reduce the risk of accidents and provide additional protection if the car is involved in a collision. Examples include automatic emergency braking if there is a risk of the car crashing, lane-keeping technology and blind-spot warning systems.

Most buyers will go into the search for a new car with a budget in mind. It’s useful to have a good look at your finances and figure out how much you can afford to spend before you start booking test drives or making a short-list. If you have a maximum budget, you can filter out vehicles that don’t fit within the bracket. When you’re calculating your budget, think about whether you want to buy a new or used car outright, part-exchange your existing vehicle or buy on finance. If you take out a loan, you can pay up-front or monthly. If you visit dealerships, there may also be an option to explore contracts including hire purchase, which enables you to pay a set fee every month for an agreed term and then either buy the car or swap it for another vehicle. If you’re interested in a specific model, for example, an Astra, visit a Vauxhall Astra dealer and ask about the options that are available to you. Once you have some figures in front of you, you can weigh up the pros and cons and decide which solution suits you best.

These days, cars come in all kinds of weird and wonderful shapes and sizes. Although it may be tempting to tour supercar showrooms, it’s not practical to have a 2-seater if you’ve got kids and you’re looking forward to family road trips and doing the school run every morning. Choose a vehicle that provides sufficient space and a model that suits your lifestyle. If you have children, pets and hobbies that involve carting large pieces of equipment around, for example, bikes or surfboards, it’s best to explore larger vehicles. You might also want to consider different fuel types. Eco-friendly cars are becoming increasingly popular.
