BENEFITS OF SILICONE VS PLASTIC

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Plastic Pollution

Change is hard! Any change…but more especially bad habits or changing a belief system that you have subscribed to over a significant period of time. The experts profess that it takes 21 days of consistent, applied effort to change any habit or form a new habit or discipline. So making the change from plastic to silicone is not going to be easy but this is why you should. With so much pollution around us, all of it man-made, we all need to be doing our bit towards reducing it and not adding to it. It all starts with our own daily life choices that either contributes to the detriment or health of our environment, lives and planet. We only have this planet to live on, let’s love it more through our choices. Start by making more eco-friendly choices when it comes to our family and our environment. #AD

These are the top 20 countries contributing towards mass mismanagement of plastic waste, ranked in order. All the items of plastic waste choking our oceans and rivers and piling up on land is not only unsightly but also harmful to plants and wildlife. Take note that South Africa just made it off the top 10!

We all need to make more effort to reduce our plastic use as much as possible every day. Stop opting for the single-use plastics and start considering silicone alternatives instead to where possible.

WHAT IS SILICONE?

According to the Webster’s New World College Dictionary, 4th Edition. Copyright © 2010 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. All rights reserved.

silicone

(ˈsɪlɪˌkoʊn)

noun

any of a group of polymerized, organic silicon compounds containing a basic structure of alternate oxygen and silicon atoms, usually with various organic groups attached to the chain: characterized by relatively high resistance to heat, water, etc. and used in oils, polishes, etc.

Why should you opt for more silicone items instead of the plastic? Well, not only is it more durable but it’s also more ocean-friendly than plastic. Silicone can handle both heat and cold far better than plastic, it’s safer for family use as it has no estrogen-mimicking toxins like BPA nor open pores for harmful bacteria to exploit. Unlike when plastic is burnt and it releases harmful chemicals into the atmosphere, whereas silicone when burnt returns to it’s harmless ingredients like sand, carbon dioxide and water vapor. The best part we thought, is that silicone doesn’t break or crack or melt under normal conditions as it’s super durable.

PLASTIC AND THE ENVIRONMENT
The environmental impact of plastic outlasts its usage life cycle by far! Landfills are filled to the brim and if we’re honest with ourselves opening new ones will not be solving our addiction to single-use plastic and the convenience it gives us. I was honestly surprised to learn that plastic can take up to 450 years to decompose, and that’s only IF it’s exposed to the right conditions.

Perhaps we should just burn up all the plastic? Wrong! Burning plastic is not an option as it will release harmful toxins into the air that is not only poisonous to the environment but also to humans and animals. Recycling plastic is not an option either as there’s just too much being produced right now, so much so that even China has stopped importing plastic for use in making polyester.

SILICONE DEPOT SOUTH AFRICA
The team at Silicone Depot SA are striving to educate the public on the negative impact of single and long-term use of plastics on our environment and our health. As education starts at home, they have introduced the silicone straw. All the products they sell are BPA-FREE, non-porous and more durable than the same product in plastic. Their products are also foldable making it easier to store and travel with. Some examples of silicone products that you could begin replacing are the plastic straws, getting yourself a silicone coffee cup to take to your favourite coffee shop for your next cuppa instead of taking one of the store’s paper cup and plastic lid.

I’ve enjoyed using the silicone reusable coffee cup especially when we head on over to the mall or school sports, love that it folds away compactly into my backpack with no mess as it seals solid!

For these and other silicone, items visit the Silicone Depot SA online store where these have a variety of products on sale ranging from baby items to home and kitchenware. Their items also include non-silicone products that are both environment and people-friendly.
