5 THINGS THAT EXCITE ME NOW THAT I’M A PARENT
I’m finding that being an adult isn’t as cool as it seemed when I was growing up. No responsibilities. If I needed to get somewhere, I could walk or I’d be dropped off without a worry about whether there was petrol in the car or not. Since becoming an adult and deciding to assume the role of a parent there are few things that I now get excited about that would repulse me before.
HAPPY OUR SON DUMPED OR TOOK A PISS
I mean, like really! No this isn’t a sexual fetish of mine if you’re seriously curious, go on and consult Dr.Google. As every parent with a toddler will relate to, your child’s toilet habits play a huge role in your day. I still recall how proud I was the day our son took a shit in the toilet. The moment was celebrated on Facebook of course and it was wonderful to see how many other parents related. As he grows, making sure he uses the toilet daily is still celebrated. For some reason, our son sees the act of taking a piss or dumping as rather laborious and one he can do without until the moment of no return!
Since our son began watching TV and learnt how to speak, it’s amazed me how well he knows the characters after watching the TV shows for a day. I mean, I watch religiously watch Designated Survivor every week and I still can’t tell you what the president’s wife’s name is in the series! Like individuals without kids get all excited about the possibility of meeting a celebrity movie actor, I now find myself getting all excited about taking our son to meet one of the characters in the different TV shows he watches. We’ve met Laa-Laa, Dipsy, Tinky Winky and Po from the Teletubbies, Ryder and Skye from Paw Patrol, Mickey Mouse and it’s been so much fun watching our son recognising them all.
Before our son came along, one finding a child-friendly venue was the last thing on my mind. As long as they served good food, good wine and an excellent view I was happy. I may or may not have sometimes elected for venues for adults only. Today, any invite that comes my way I first check to see if the venue is child-friendly before I decide to accept or decline the invite. Finding a venue close to home that I can go and have a cuppa coffee while watching our son play is such a score for me now.
I CAN SING-ALONG
Until our son came along, I’d honestly skip and channel showing a children’s show. Like, no. Today I find myself still watching Paw Patrol or Transformers Rescue Bots or Puss in Boots or Shrek long after our son has left the room, or singing along to the songs … all on my own. It’s not like I went out to learn words … they just popped into my head I swear!
BACK TO SCHOOL
As our toddler started school, so it seems did we. I thought I left homework when I finished varsity. Clearly not, as a parent today it feels like I’ve been sent back to school. Yep, I’m now helping … more like doing all the research to help our son complete his pre-school projects. They not yet too hectic, but it’s giving us a clear indication of what’s to come in the years ahead. Hubby and I love it though, especially when we discover new things we didn’t know or had forgotten.
