LGBTQ+ HOLIDAY MOVIES 2021

LGBTQ+ HOLIDAY MOVIES 2021
Reading Time: 3 minutes

The festive season is once again upon us. How quickly did we get here! Yay to my favourite time of the year.

I enjoy this time of the year because as a family we get to spend more time together uninterrupted by work or school. We get to ‘wake up late’ and ‘stay up late‘. We explore our surroundings for the day and find new locations to enjoy and have fun as a family.  It’s the perfect time to spend loads of time in the pool, and watch movies galore!

Like in 2020, this sadly will be another festive season where it’s just my boys and I at home. The Covid cases are escalating around Gauteng province again, doubling daily in the number of new cases compared to the previous day. 2020 wasn’t easy for many of us, and the festive season this year is bound to be different for many of us again. For us, it’s going to be a quiet festive season with no family around again. We would have visited family in Eswatini, spent time outdoors as much as possible fishing, sightseeing, cooking up a storm, braaiing, swimming. Quality time with family that we don’t see often enough.

There’s another reason why this time of the year is special for me, the movie houses like Hallmark release a whole bunch of Christmas themed movies about this time of the year. I LURVE it! It’s a form of escapism from reality for an hour or 3, for me. Until last year, most of the movies did not include any modern family setups, like a gay couple or a family with two moms. Last year was the first time that some were released. The Christmas House was well received, and I hear that there’s a sequel to be released on December 18, 2021. I can’t wait to watch it!

I guess following the success of The Christmas House, there are a few more being released this year. Now, take a minute to ‘stop life’ and breathe, appreciating life and our blessings.

THE CHRISTMAS HOUSE 2:Deck Those Halls

Hallmark’s festive season movie release for the first time ever centres around an LGBT+ storyline. The movie scored more than 13 million viewings over the 2020 holiday season,  so a sequel was a no-brainer.

In the follow-up to The Christmas House, the Mitchell brothers, Mike (Buckley) and Brandon (Bennett), compete to see who can create the best Christmas house. The rest of the original movie’s main cast will also return, including Treat Williams and Sharon Lawrence as Mike and Brandon’s parents, Bill and Phylis. Ana Ayora will be back as Andi, Mike’s high school crush, and Brad Harder as Brandon’s husband Jake.

SINGLE ALL THE WAY

I think it’s for the first time, that Netflix releases a Christmas movie featuring a same-sex couple.

Desperate to avoid his family’s judgment about being single, Peter (Ugly Betty’s Michael Urie) persuades best friend Nick (Philemon Chambers) to pose as his boyfriend on a trip home for the holidays. Their facade soon drops when Peter’s mother Christmas Carole (Kathy Najimy) sets him up with a handsome local trainer James (Luke Macfarlane). As Peter and James go on a few dates, the family becomes focused on trying to make a real relationship happen between Peter and Nick.

Thoroughly enjoyed it!

CHRISTMAS AT THE RANCH

The third Lesbian/Queer Holiday RomCom by Christin Baker!  When Haley Hollis returns to her family ranch to try and save it from closure, she wasn’t banking on spending so much time with ranch hand Kate – or falling for her.

UNDER THE CHRISTMAS TREE

Marketing whiz Alma Beltran (Elise Bauman) and Christmas tree whisperer Charlie Freemont (Tattiawna Jones) cross paths when Charlie finds the perfect tree for the Maine Governor’s Holiday Celebration – right in Alma’s back yard. While they initially spar, romantic sparks soon begin to fly between the two women as the enchanting tree and some Christmas fairy dust from the town’s pâtissière extraordinaire (Ricki Lake) bring out the best in them and spark each other to take leaps of faith and fight for love and Christmas magic.

A JENKINS FAMILY CHRISTMAS

After the loss of a loved one, the Jenkins Family attempts to carry on with their Christmas traditions while learning to navigate a new normal. An unexpected twist will arrive at the festivities.
