BOEREWORS AND MASH WITH CHAKALAKA TO CELEBRATE FAMILY DAY THE LOCKDOWN WAY

As the long weekend approaches, South Africans are in lockdown no doubt trying to find creative ways to keep themselves entertained. With this in mind, here are some ideas to celebrate family day the lockdown way.

 

Video Chat platforms like Zoom, Facetime and House Party are all great tools to remain connected with family, loved ones and friends. So, why not use the long weekend to host a couple of themed dinner parties with delicious food, company and upcycled décor.

 

Add some true South African spirit into your virtual themed party with this delicious Rhodes Quality recipe, Boerewors and Mash with Chakalaka a proudly South African dish with some crafty suggestions of ways to use your leftover tin cans.

Easy and budget-friendly, this recipe is the perfect solution for a hearty family meal.

 

DECOR IDEA

Create Spekboom planters by cleaning the tin cans and painting them with the South African flag colours, Shweshwe designs or anything uniquely South African. Use them to plant succulents or Spekboom. You could even gift them to the family after lock-down.

Boerewors and Mash with Chakalaka

Ingredients

Boerewors

  • 1 Tin Rhodes Quality Chakalaka 410g
  • 500 g Boerewors
  • 2 Tbsp Sunflower Oil
  • 1 Large Onion Sliced

Mashed Potatoes

  • 1 kg Potatoes
  • 125 ml Milk ½ Cup
  • 3 Tbsp Butter or Margarine
  • Salt and Freshly cracked Black Pepper

Instructions

  1. Peel the potatoes and chop into quarters.

  2. Bring water to the boil in a large pot or saucepan and Add the potatoes and salt

  3. Cook over medium heat until potatoes are soft and breakable when poked

  4. Drain the Potatoes

  5. Add milk to the pot or saucepan you just used to boil the potatoes

  6. Add the butter or margarine and bring to boil

  7. Add the drained potatoes to the milk in the pot or saucepan, make sure heat is low, and mash the potatoes in the pot with masher

  8. Stir the mashed potatoes and milk mixture until creamy

  9. Season the potato mash to taste with salt and pepper and set aside

  10. AirFry the boerewors until cooked and browned on both sides

  11. Heat the oil in the saucepan and fry the onions until soften and translucent

  12. Add the Rhodes Quality Chakalaka to the onions and bring to boil

  13. Cut the Boerewors into smaller pieces and add to the Chakalaka mix

  14. Make sure the Chakalaka is heated through, serve it hot over the mashed potatoes
